Recyclable barrier coatings
Around 160 million tons of new packaging material are produced worldwide every year. Of this, only 9% is reused in new products and thus recycled. However, according to the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), all packaging must be recyclable by 2030. This increases the pressure to rethink existing material concepts.
Recyclable plastic packaging without compromising performance
Although multilayer packaging structures have excellent barrier properties, they are often not recyclable. This creates growing pressure on packaging manufacturers and material developers to develop functional packaging solutions that meet both regulatory requirements and technical performance parameters.
Use of barrier coatings in monomaterial packaging
The white paper "Packaging Coatings – Composite Barrier Lacquers" deals with the use of functional barrier lacquers in monomaterial packaging as a solution. The focus is on PVA- and MMT-based coating systems that provide an effective oxygen barrier and are also suitable for mechanical recycling. In addition, it explains how packaging coatings can be produced on an industrial scale using the WAB agitator bead mill DYNO-MILL MULTI LAB.
